My body, my priorities, and my routines. Most drastically, however, was how I spent time outdoors. Gone were the days of 12 hour hikes, camping on mountaintops, and multi-day road trips. Before I became a mother, I was free to roam where I wished, and I spent my time chasing the next big experience. Enter Ezra, my son. The grandest of experiences. The mountaintop to rival all mountaintops. With his arrival into our family, many things shifted. My time was no longer my own. My world revolved around his needs and limitations. It was not an easy transition, and I would be lying if I said I didn’t struggle- I often felt like I was missing out. I had to wrestle with my new identity, but I came out the other end with a deeper appreciation for my own backyard. As I began to see the world through my son’s eyes, I started to revel in the beauty at my fingertips. He taught me that magic can be found in the shortest of trails and the closest of views. That each day provides an opportunity to experience something new and awe-inspiring, even on trails we’ve walked a hundred times. Nowadays, my adventures may seem simpler and less grand, but there is a deep contentment in our slower wanderings. We’ve gotten to know all the little trails and off-shoots in our favourite park. We’ve learned to identify more bugs and mushrooms than I even knew existed- things I so often missed or overlooked before he arrived in my life. Staying close to home has only enriched my experiences in nature and fostered a deep love for the place I call home. I used to spend my time seeking the next epic experience.
