I'm Alan Poelman, a Mental Health Worker slash Photographer, and not the other way around (shameless Zoolander reference), based in Northern Ontario. My two favourite things to photograph are tiny people in epic backdrops, and pretty much any critter I can find - you can see examples on my Instagram feed @alftown and feel free to stop by anytime.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I've called Northern Ontario my home for the duration of time I've set foot on this planet, and for that, it has become a special place within Canada for me. There are no great mountains here that seemingly soar into the clouds, or oceans spanning across an endless horizon, but we do have vast forests and an abundance of freshwater lakes to be grateful for. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ When I first began taking up photography as a hobby, I was oftentimes envious of the landscapes found in other provinces... and countries, not realizing that my own emotional resolve towards home was in fact the biggest barrier to growth. This is a significant lesson for any photographer who feels confined by their environment; adopt healthy thought processes, affecting how you feel emotionally, which contribute to behaviours that support positive change. This is what we call 'The Cognitive Triangle' in the field of mental health. Based on CBT it uses an effective evidence based approach that supports healthy ways of thinking. In times when we are limited in our travel opportunities, it's important to be grateful for what we have in our own backyard.
