Thanks to the plentiful rain we’ve had so far, the ticks are thriving and plentiful. 😩 An over infestation of ticks is never good news as they can carry diseases that can be detrimental to the animals. In the wild there will always be some form of tick load however healthy animals will cope just fine and will build resistance. Mutual grooming in lions helps dislodge the ticks. It’s when health is compromised that you’ll notice the tick load increase. In captivity you need to follow a stringent de-ticking routine that includes using different products to avoid tick resistance, but even so you’ll still find the odd tick here and there that needs to be dealt with. The African Bont Tick is really resilient and is hard to pull off by hand without leaving its biting parts behind, hence the specialised tick removal tool.
