Then in January, 2020, Graham heard about a novel coronavirus that had emerged in Wuhan and called McLellan. “We got the [COVID-19 genome] sequences Friday night, the 10th of January,” Graham said. “We woke up on the 11th and started designing proteins.” Within days, they had designed the modified proteins and turned their scheme over to Moderna, for manufacturing. Six weeks later, Moderna began shipping vials of vaccine for clinical trials.
