sometimes joy is found in three hours of sleep and no cell service and bickering with your little sister and nachos from the only restaurant in town and sand in your shoes and moments to cherish forever

while i have you, let’s talk about the racist history of national parks! first and foremost, all public lands are the result of the removal of Indigenous people from their ancestral lands. to not acknowledge that in conversations about national parks is erasure (@indigenouswomenhike has a lot of informative things to say about this). also! did you know Black people make up less than 2% of national park visitors? why do you think that is? i have heard and read from a variety of Black people (@joytripproject wrote a great piece on this for national geographic—linked in my ‘things to know’ stories) that it is because they feel unsafe and unwelcome. and, unfortunately, it’s understandable. in september (this year!), someone vandalized a sign in great smoky mountains national park with a bearskin and a racist message (@outdoorsydiva responded to this incident with a live archived on her igtv that everyone should watch). what i’m trying to say is that i know i’m privileged to be able to plan a spur of the moment trip to a park with my family and not have to dwell too much on whether or not we feel safe to do so. and as i’m trying to be more cognizant of the ways others do not have this luxury, i encourage you to be too! if my experience looks just like yours, expand your horizons and follow more BIPOC who offer differing (and often sobering) experiences on what it is like to be a person of color in the outdoors. (some more follow recommendations: @she_colorsnature, @wildginaa, @urbanclimbr, @intersectionalenvironmentalist !)
