been road tripping for the past three weeks (by myself, wearing a mask always, etc) and there are a myriad of things i could say about the waterfalls in oregon or the mountains in washington or the wildflowers in wyoming (they were lit), but i’ll spare you the melodrama. i already knew this experience was a result of my privilege (i have a car, i have money to spend on lodging, i have parents that are cool with me dropping off the grid for a bit), but i got hit with another learning curve upon realizing my privilege had a whole other layer to it.

when i first started making travel plans, i wanted to camp everywhere since it’s cheaper and generally more fun but quickly had to nix the idea when i looked at the facts: i am a small, young woman traveling by herself and also axe murderers exist. i briefly lamented not being able to travel the way i wanted because of things about myself that i can not change. it was sobering to realize that Black people experience this EVERY TIME they travel regardless of the minutiae of the trip.

@cam__alejandra (who wrote the text in these slides) has been an especially helpful resource for learning about realities of the Black experience like this. her posts and stories offer ways for you to reflect on your own work/life, suggestions for how to continue sustainable activism in our lives and on our feeds, and showcases companies and brands that are or aren’t actually practicing true allyship. highly suggest giving her (and the other accounts i’ve posted about previously) a follow. her travel experiences are far more important than mine.
