The most important thing for me is to show the beauty of traditional Iranian architecture to the people of the world. It’s a very difficult task because under the best of circumstances it’s not possible to capture the fullness of the beauty in a single frame.

This is why my photographs usually begin with a picture of the interior or exterior that’s captured by a wide-angle lens, frequently from a low angle.

In subsequent photos I try to capture details of the buildings that grab my attention. Then I look at the picture and if I’ve captured half the beauty that I saw, then I’ve done my job.”

(Laila here) When I was in art school at The Savannah College of Art & Design @scaddotedu I took an Islamic art and architecture class where I learned about how it was forbidden for man to create anything that was representational of the “creator’s” creations. Essentially one would offend the creator in the attempt at emulating life. Consequently the complexity of the architecture found in mosques and patterned tilework are considered permissible expressions of excellence in artistry without offending the creator. This is not a hard and fast rule in modern times but was historically the case.
