Reflecting on the New Zealand Secondary School Champs over the weekend, I am over the moon to see so many of the athletes I coach and so many athletes I know do so well! But I also wanted to acknowledge those that may have not reached their goals or expectations over the weekend and encourage you to keep going! Although I have won a lot of races over my career, there has also been a lot of struggle behind the scenes and a lot of bad races, or even tough whole seasons. I had a lot of success at a young age, after joining a club at 10 and getting a coach at 13. I guess I started making a mark at 13 years old when I won the 400m, 800m and 1500m at both the North Island and South Island Colgate Games. Then at 14 years old I represented New Zealand at the Pacific School Games in Melbourne and won the 800m there in a huge personal best by running 2.10.48. Things were great! However fast forward the clock a year and I was no longer winning everything and my times were drastically slower. I got my first period at 15 and was growing a lot. I was running around 2.18- 2.20 most of the season & raced at the Australian Youth Olympics, coming right near the back of the field maybe 2nd to last.I was wondering what had happened, I had won my last event in Australia a year earlier and now I was running so much slower in every event I did. I also became really unco, like my limbs weren't working in coordination properly doing drills and that, and my body shape was changing. Everything felt harder. Thankfully my coach Maria was very supportive & assured me I would get through this and it was very normal for female athletes. I was trying so hard but didn't feel like myself running.I remember feeling like giving up. But I kept persevering and tried to just run for the joy of it. I am so glad I did. The following season I started improving again and ran lots faster, getting my PB down to 2.07 at 16 years old and going to my first World Junior Champs in Poland!
