DAILY BOWIE THING – Day 43

“If we can sparkle he may land tonight…” *

As you can see, today is #BowieSheetMusicSunday. The red and orange examples were published in the UK, while the black one was produced for Australia.

Released on Friday 28th April 1972, The Bowie/Ken Scott-produced Starman 45 eventually reached #10 on the UK singles chart on the weekend of 29th July. As with Space Oddity in 1969, Starman was a slow burner but appearances on Lift Off and Top Of The Pops secured the single’s success, not to mention Bowie’s future as a globe-straddling superstar.

As the record started a similarly slow descent from the chart, it was overtaken by Mott The Hoople’s Bowie-penned All The Young Dudes on its way to #3, their biggest hit in the UK.

Sheet music was a big deal back then, with its own separate chart. Mott’s All The Young Dudes sheet music in the UK had a very similar design to the Australian Starman sheet music.
