There's a deceptive kind of polar ice that is floating in the Arctic. While it looks thick and stable from a distance, it can break apart before researchers’ eyes — in a phenomenon known as "rotten ice". Since scientists have long relied on satellites to measure ice, discovery of this illusion has led to a scary truth: That our ice caps are actually more at risk than we thought. And this impact extends far beyond the North Pole. “The Arctic connects to the temperate parts of the planet and may even connect to the tropical parts of our planet, and we’re just beginning to understand how these complex interconnections work," says researcher David Barber. Head to the link in our bio to learn more about how this receding ice could be increasing extreme weather events even where you live.
