Photo by @jimrichardsonng / The great bay at Uig on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland was calm on this evening. Even at full tide the bay is only a few feet deep. At low tide you can walk all the way across to the dunes on the south shore, where the Lewis chessmen were found in 1831. (An unlucky Viking lost them in the dunes about 800 years before that.) Vikings from Norway knew this place well; it was on the route that took them from Bergen to Orkney, around the north coast of Scotland, to the Outer Hebrides, and then down to Dublin.
