Anyone who has followed my journey knows that birds are as much part of my life as lions. Many moons ago I was known as ‘The Bird Man of Orange Grove’, a small suburb just north of the Johannesburg CBD, in South Africa. I’ve always had a passion for birds and how diversified they are as a species. To this day I can still vividly remember raising a baby bird with my father, back when I was just knee high to a grasshopper. They’re often overlooked in the bush, so it was wonderful to be in the presence of some rather well versed twitchers on my recent trip to the bush. I felt out of my depth and rusty on my bird knowledge which inspired me to get back into birding. Birds are all around us and are fascinating to watch. When last did you stop and appreciate the bird life around you? This spectacular little fellow is a Southern White-faced Owl. They are not easy to photograph and my night photography skills are much to be desired, but I’m pretty pleased how this snap turned out.
