Taghia, Morocco, 2017 🌍
Travel memories: part 1
•
I planned to visit Taghia's red limestone walls for a long time already, when @arnaudpetit_climb told me about a project he never finished bolting. When he sent me photos of a 400 meter wall overhanging for half the way, I was sold right away.
•
The village of Taghia sits deep in the mountains several hours from the nearest road. A few hundred berber people lead an honest but hard life (electricity came only a few years ago), sheepherding and farming the hillsides around the canyon.
•
Rock climbers have been coming here since the 90ies, when legends like Michel Piola discovered the many steep walls up to 1000 meters, and it's been a climbing mecca since.
•
After climbing some of the classics, @jonglassberg and I set off to finish Arnaud's route, climbing and bolting for several days until we reached the summit of the Tadrarate wall. Out of the 12 pitches, 5 are estimated between 8b and 9a, making this a unique project. Hard boulder problems, some long runouts, and endless mini crimps. Any takers?
•
I'm not sure when I will return, and if so, I doubt I will be strong enough to free this line, but one day someone will take over and finish what has been started even before I came: 'the Marrakech Express'
