The portrait became the first painting to sell for more than £1 million, establishing a new record price for any work of art at auction when it realized £2,310,000 on 27 November 1970. .⠀ Velázquez painted this portrait of Juan de Pareja, his assistant, in Rome while traveling in Italy in 1650 and when the portrait was first exhibited at the Pantheon later that year, viewers were astounded by the startling likeness to the sitter.⠀ .⠀ The picture was bought at the Christie's sale by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, who at the time regarded it as 'among the most important acquisitions in the museum's history'.
