This year for Polar Bear Week (Nov 1-7) I had a special opportunity to celebrate in the Polar Bear Capital of the world, Churchill, Manitoba with guide Alex (@discover_churchill) on the ground, and the PBI Team (@polarbearsinternational) on Buggy One.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Snow had already greeted the Taiga, and here the howling winds dictated everything. A place built by legends, past and present. The remnants of history scattered artfully amongst the rugged landscape, often adorned by beautiful murals. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Churchill is unique for many reasons, but to me it is how they coexist with polar bears. Conservation officers patrol the perimeters to haze the bears away, so they don't end up in polar bear jail (yes this is a thing, instead of killing problem bears they go to jail for 30 days or until the ice freezes). They also have strange quirks like no locking car doors, so anyone can find safe haven in a parked vehicle if a bear sneaks into town. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ PBI has a beautiful conservation and outreach office here with an exhibit on polar bears, and climate change (highly recommended). I was incredibly grateful for the opportunity to hang out on PBI's tundra buggy for a few days, and see how the team streams the live polar bear cams on @exploreorg. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ From my ground tours with Alex I was able to photograph my subjects at eye level, safely and ethically. There was truly never a dull moment. To top it off we even lucked out with a brief Aurora show. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ I told myself this would be a once in a lifetime trip, but I assure you I'll be back when it's safe to do so. Fingers crossed, i am already looking at returning for belugas and bears in the summer.
