I’m Kara O‘Keefe (@karaokeefe), a pharmacist and freelance photographer from Canada’s most easterly province - Newfoundland and Labrador.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Growing up in a province isolated from the rest of Canada leant itself to the development of my desire to travel. I have been so privileged to experience countless impressive, breathtaking places in my travels. Seeing the world and its wonders allowed me to appreciate our own wonders here at home. The lightning crack of an iceberg calving, humpback whales feeding metres from the shore, brilliant sunsets over rocky cliffs, the smell of the ocean on a foggy day, the tones of our barren bogs, our colourful homes, a bucket of cod just caught in the bay. And the people! The quick wit, the charming accents, the hospitality, the beauty in chit chat with a stranger. Each nook and cranny of our province, which I’m privileged to photograph, grounds me closer and closer to my home. This year has demonstrated, more than ever, the importance of exploring, supporting, and contributing to the places we call home.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Newfoundland and Labrador is raw. It is honest in its culture and spirit. Our landscape, rural makeup, and heritage are striking to all who visit. We share a deep pride for our province, its beauty, and our ability to make this rock our home. This is apparent from the row houses of St. John’s, to the rural communities dotting our shores, to the northern tip of Labrador. You’ll be tickled to hear it in a variety of dialects if you simply take the time to listen. I am a proud Canadian and a proud Newfoundlander - both of which I carry with me throughout my travels. This pride for my heritage and love for my home shines brightest when I hold my camera. It serves as an extension of myself, which I use to present my province.⁠⠀ My only advice is to get out there and seek the beauty in your own home and surroundings.
