Michael J. Fox’s life seemed to all come crashing down in the spring of 2018, when the removal of a tumor from his spine forced him to learn how to walk again. After a nasty post-surgery fall, he wondered whether his sunny demeanor was hurting more than helping. ⠀
⠀
“Jesus Christ, optimism, what the f— is optimism?” @realmikejfox remembers asking himself while sitting alone on the kitchen floor after his fall, his left arm shattered. ⠀
⠀
“Over the next few months, I questioned—as my arm healed—peddling optimism as a panacea for all that ails us,” says the actor, whose latest memoir, “No Time Like the Future: An Optimist Considers Mortality,” comes out Tuesday.⠀
⠀
The “Back to the Future” and “Family Ties” star, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, has both faced significant adversity and maintained an enviable acting career, with supporting roles in “Rescue Me” and “The Good Wife,” and a seemingly idyllic family life. ⠀
⠀
He also co-founded @michaeljfoxorg, which has raised almost a billion dollars for Parkinson’s research in its 20 years of existence. But this most recent surgery and fall—combined with the coronavirus pandemic that had him sheltering in place with his family on Long Island—proved to be the biggest test to his optimism yet. ⠀
⠀
“It was a challenge to myself and to others but ultimately to myself as the ultimate optimist,” he says.⠀
