New sidewalk stands have been popping up around New York City, hawking everything from leopard-print face masks and empanadas to lucky Buddha statues. Many are run by people who lost their jobs because of the pandemic. They’ve taken to the streets in hopes of earning a living.⠀
⠀
“It’s the way we eat now—we have to stay on our toes and think,” says Anthony “the Ultimate Hustla” Peterson, pictured in the first photo, who jumped into the street-vending scene after his wholesale make-up business dried up in the lockdown.⠀
⠀
Through his wholesale contacts, Peterson got started delivering items such as masks and wipes to vendors citywide. Then he launched his own stand in Harlem before relocating to Midtown Manhattan and eventually settling in Downtown Brooklyn. His evolving selection of face masks, priced at five for $20, includes Dior knockoffs and pink sequin designs.⠀
⠀
Desmin McBride, pictured in the third photo, lost his event-staffing job at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in March and was among the first of this new wave of vendors. He bought items like gloves, hand sanitizer and and wipes to sell from a folding table, first in Downtown Brooklyn and then at his current location on East 14th Street in Manhattan.⠀
⠀
Within weeks, he didn’t have to source his own inventory—there were dealers delivering items directly to street vendors around the city.⠀
