Photo by @daisygilardini / A scene from Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, reflects in the water at sunrise.
One of the first rules we learn in photography is the rule of thirds. The idea is to always frame your subject in one third of the image to make the composition more dynamic and interesting. Our eye is naturally drawn into the center of the image. If the subject is right there in the center, the image is too immediate, and we lose interest faster. If the subject is not in the center, then our brain needs to think and send an impulse to our eyes. Our eyes have to move and refocus to find the subject. This boosts our curiosity and enhances our image perception.
Some rules are made to be broken, however! When photographing reflections, I like to have my subject and the horizon line directly in the center to achieve perfect symmetry.
