It may not look like much, but the California aglaja nudibranch is a highly skilled and insatiable predator. This species has “sensory mounds” on each side of its mouth that are thought to be chemoreceptors capable of detecting complex sugars in the slime trails left behind by prey. By following these trails, this hunter is led straight to its next meal, which often includes various species of sea slugs, bubble snails, and even other species of nudibranchs.
