Photo by @babaktafreshi / During a pitch-black, starry night in Death Valley National Park, a car drives downhill from a mountain vista looking toward the east. The yellow glow on the horizon resembles sunrise, but it is actually Las Vegas at midnight, from 90 miles (145 kilometers) away!

⁣⁣Inside cities with so much light, you are enveloped in the artificial skyglow where the natural night environment is gone. According to the International Dark Sky Association, the negative effects of this loss might seem intangible, but a growing body of evidence links the brightening night sky to increasing energy consumption,⁣ disrupting the ecosystem and wildlife,⁣ harming human health⁣, and effecting crime and safety negatively. ⁣The good news is that light pollution, unlike many other forms of pollution, is reversible, and each one of us can make a difference by learning more.
