We were saddened to learn that the legendary French interior designer François Catroux passed away yesterday in Paris at the age of 83. Born in Algeria, Catroux was never formally trained in design but, after founding his Paris design office in 1968, went on to become the designer of choice for aristocrats, moguls, royals, and tastemakers. A former classmate and contemporary of Yves Saint Laurent, he was celebrated for his high 1970s decadence, which blended modernism with traditional elements. In ELLE Decor’s September 2017 issue, @cynthiaefrank visited Catroux and his wife and YSL muse, Betty Catroux, at their home in Provence. “I’m like a guest in my house,” Betty said. “It’s all François’s doing, you know. I live with a genius. I’m the luckiest girl in the world.” Here, the two are photographed by @pascalchevallier outside their 16th-century stone house near the village of Lourmarin.
