Forget the luck of the draw, Botero's characters don't settle for the hand they are dealt. A trailblazer himself, Fernando Botero has gained international notoriety for his voluminous forms and scenes of the everyday imbued with irony and humor.
.⠀
Here, with the theme of 'the cardsharp,' Botero gives a nod to those masters of old—Cézanne, Caravaggio, and de la Tour—but places his subjects closer to home. ‘Card Players’ recalls scenes from the red-light district in his native Medellín, a place that fascinated and intrigued him as a young boy and later served as inspiration for an aspiring artist, much like the Parisian brothels that so captivated Henri Toulouse-Lautrec.⠀
.
Within this backroom affair, a heated game is taking place. Despite their poker faces, here everyone's a cheat. A card tucked into a trouser, another hidden under a fleshy thigh, or being quietly passed from one to another, all while the madame of the house looks on.⠀

Fernando Botero (b. 1932), 'Card Players', Painted in 1986. Estimate: $1,000,000 – 1,500,000⠀
