We know that from the radio carbon dating of the charcoal used to make them. Europe was an unimaginably different place millennia ago. Lions and rhinoceroses roamed the continent. I had the privilege to photograph the artwork in Chauvet for a @natgeo story. Standing in front of the paintings was a life-changing experience: It was like having an ancient artist speak straight to me across that huge gulf of time.
