A highlight of our upcoming Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Sale, Roy Lichtenstein's 'Pitcher Triptych' is less a representation of an object than an exploration of painterly styles and signals, typical of the artist's analytical approach.⠀
.⠀
'It was with a competitive eye on art history that Lichtenstein conducted a brisk march through the conventional genres of portrait, still-life, landscape, and history painting, adapting them to his cartoon look as if he were translating the Great Books into slang,' says American art critic Peter Schjeldahl.⠀
.⠀
Whilst parodying the Modernist idea of artistic progress as a journey from figuration to abstraction, the work's episodic format also looks back to Lichtenstein's comic-strip-based paintings of the 1960s. Lichtenstein relished the 'accidental' modernism of the comics' visual style, with their flattening of space and simplification of form.⠀
.⠀
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1977). 'Pitcher Triptych', 1972. Estimate: £1,600,000–2,500,000.⠀
