I could SEE the story unfolding. . HEAR it. . FEEL it deep in my gut. . By the time I finished reading the story I knew I wanted to make it into a film. My first film. I sat down and immediately started adapting it into a script. . (I wasn’t sure exactly what I was doing but I’d read some Syd Field and figured I had nothing to lose) . Luckily when I reached out to Scott a few weeks later he was open to the idea of my adaptation. . I decided to self finance the shooting (thank fashion photography) and assembled a crew of longtime collaborators who I’d been working with regularly on advertising and editorial shoots. . Though I’d never directed a film - I’d been running sets and leading creative teams for years at that point. . Finding ways to tell stories in a single frame. . Paying close attention to EVERYTHING in that frame. . Making sure it helped to convey the story I wanted to tell. . This was incredibly valuable when I moved into filmmaking. With the luxury of 24 frames (per second!) instead of just one - the opportunities were limitless! . We shot BUGCRUSH in my home state of Maine. It wasn’t an easy shoot by any means. . It also wasn’t cheap. . But it WAS exactly the sort of story I’d been aching to tell. . A dark queer story about desire and fear and how dangerous those two things can be when they meet. . I figured it would be a film that found a niche audience and might play at a few small genre or queer film festivals. . But that was okay by me. . Because I was making BUGCRUSH 100% for myself. Not for some imagined audience or financier client. . Just for me. . I never imagined how many people would end up finding my strange little queer horror short or the affect it would have on my creative path. . To be continued... .
