Soon after his election the previous November, an automobile accident claimed the lives of his wife and infant daughter and put his two young sons in the hospital. I was probably photographing through tears. * I was fresh out of graduate school in photojournalism, and it was one of my earliest assignments as a new photographer at the Wilmington, Delaware News-Journal. Going through my archives for my book, I’ve been amazed at the number of icons, legends, heroes and villains I’ve photographed through the decades. Some were just starting out on their journey, as Joe Biden and I were in that hospital room, and some were already firmly established in the firmament.
