Photo by @daisygilardini / Every year in February and March, harp seals give birth to their pups on the pack ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Quebec. They are the most common seal species in the Northern Hemisphere, with a global population of almost nine million individuals.
Harp seals rarely spend time on land. They’re incredible swimmers and can dive deeper than 300 meters (984 feet) while holding their breath for 15 minutes at a time.
Harp seals are sociable animals and at times gather in large groups. They have a wide range of vocalizations for communication, both above and below the water. #seal #harpseal #whitecoat #magdalenislands #quebec
