Photo by @nickcobbing // Kittiwakes at Gnålodden Svalbard
Svalbard must be a contender for the strangest place names. This picture was taken underneath a towering cliff called Gnålberget on a fjord called Hornsund. In Norwegian the word ‘gnål’ means ‘nagging’ and was used to name the cliffs after the constant sound of nesting colonies of black-legged kittiwakes and Brünnich’s guillemots. If you want to practice your Norwegian, the letter å is pronounced like an ‘aw’ as in ‘yawn’. This picture was selected recently for the American Photography 35 award and the accompanying book.
