With only one room, distancing becomes almost impossible. While most schools in Pennsylvania shifted instruction online, Amish schools switched to remote assignments with paper and pencil. Traditional Amish families do not own computers and many do not have electricity. Amish schools have discretion on how to handle lessons. In some cases, one child from each family will go to the schoolhouse and pick up assignments for all children in a family. Sometimes the teacher might stop by each home to deliver assignments and pick up completed school work. Students occasionally visit the teacher at school or home to grade assignments. Some teachers give private, at-home lessons.
