When on land, penguins are very noisy animals. They vocalize quite a bit. Their vocalizations are squawky and, in some species, sound like a high-pitched braying. They use different vocalizations depending on the situation. Studies suggest there are three kinds of calls: those used for contact, those used as threats, and those that are sexual in nature. Each individual has a distinctive voice, which makes it easier for other penguins to recognize them.
