Photos by @MichaelGeorge / The restaurant Purunchi is part of a small fisherman’s village on the south side of the island of Curaçao. The setup is pretty ingenious. They built a row of buildings on the ocean, with a seawall to protect them from the waves. There are restaurants on the first level, and the fishermen and families who run the restaurants live on the second floor. Their boats are anchored just behind the floating seating areas, and they sometimes fish only five feet (1.5 meters) from where you’re eating. There are no menus; they simply drop off the catch and tell you what’s available. It is ocean-to-table dining and some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever have.
In a few of these images, you can see the invasive lionfish, which is territorial and has been decimating local fish species. Fishermen catch the lionfish en masse and fry it up at these restaurants. One lucky thing: It is delicious, so it’s an easy sell.
