Simone credits her childhood life in North Carolina as being the foundation for her musical career. “Everything that happened to me as a child involved music. It was a part of everyday life, as automatic as breathing,” she wrote in her autobiography. Within the walls of that three-room, 660 sq-ft home where she had lived with her parents and seven siblings, a star was born. But years (and many inhabitants) later, and the house went a decade uninhabited, rendering the structure in need of delicate care. One couple purchased the home to restore as a monument to Simone’s legacy, and eventually sold it to a group of New York artists with a goal of rescuing it from obliteration. The artists launched a collaboration with the National Trust for Historic Preservation–@savingplaces—and raised more money with help from the likes of @johnlegend. Last summer, the National Trust’s Hands-On Preservation Experience (HOPE) Crew—which trains young people in historic-preservation trades—helped to restore and complete the storied structure.
