It’s hard to see the light when you’re looking from inside a tunnel. Visually imagining yourself scaling outside of the tunnel…and further out….and further out from there, and there you can find billions upon billions of computational variations of perspective from which to view any single feeling or reality. Just pause each morning and ask yourself: if I scale out and view my situation with a wider lens, what other perspective exists, and is it possible for me to choose that perspective, if even temporarily? Every morning, I write down 5 things I’m grateful for in a journal. If I’m having a hard time conjuring gratitude, I try to widen my perspective.

It’s hard to see the light when you’re looking from inside a tunnel. Visually imagining yourself scaling outside of the tunnel…and further out….and further out from there, and there you can find billions upon billions of computational variations of perspective from which to view any single feeling or reality.

Gaining perspective is the reason astronauts return to earth and see themselves (and the world) differently. It’s also the reason people are forever changed after a psychedelic journey, or their first trip to a faraway place.

But gaining perspective doesn’t require traveling to the moon or taking a plant medicine. Just pause each morning and ask yourself: if I scale out and view my situation with a wider lens, what other perspective exists, and is it possible for me to choose that perspective, if even temporarily?

As we enter a contentious debate season, and continue navigating our way through the virus, any reminder that things may not be as bad as they appear (and likely aren’t), is not just healthy- it’s pragmatic.

Leave a 🤓 if you are committed to looking at things with a wider lens.
