As the sun sets, the night comes alive with its own cacophony of sounds. Patuxent Research Refuge in #Maryland is about a forty-minute drive from both Baltimore and Washington, DC. Urban National Wildlife Refuge Day was created to celebrate refuges just like this one -- places for both #wildlife and people to reset near bustling development. From floodplain forests to the #Patuxent River, the refuge is an important stopover during the fall and spring migrations for birds, and over 270 #bird species have been spotted here, using it as a place to rest and feed. As for the 80 percent of Americans who live in or near cities, urban national wildlife refuges provide vital access to #nature and #outdoor recreation.
