Photo by @babaktafreshi / A bright meteor like this is called a fireball. Far from city lights and our artificial skyglow, in a naturally dark, starry summer night in Yosemite National Park, the Milky Way was glowing horizon to horizon, as seen in this fish-eye photograph. Most visible meteors are caused by pebble- and grain-size particles. But a fireball like this is generated by a larger walnut-size object.
