The Sassi, now on the UNESCO World Heritage List, hold evidence of human settlements from the Paleolithic period to the present day. After a period of decline adventurous artists began moving back, and the recent history of the Sassi is precisely that of an awakening. Caves were restored and turned into more comfortable houses, unique hotels, restaurants, and galleries. Matera came back to life to the point that it was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture in 2019.
