Some have amazing super-black plumage to better show off ornaments like the bright neck feathers of this Magnificent Riflebird filmed by @TimLaman and Ed Scholes in West Papua, Indonesia for the @BirdsofParadiseProject. Listen to the audio to hear the amazing sounds the male’s wings make, which is all part of his display to try to impress a female. Ed and I spent over 80 hours in blinds to film this sequence. The male came every day and called from this vine, but we only had a couple brief visits by a female in all that time. Photographing Birds-of-Paradise requires a lot of patience, but its worth it because sharing these stories is so important for bringing attention to the value of Papua’s forests. Right now, the guardians of these forests, the landowners who live there, have lost an important income source from international visitors coming to see their birds.
