The deer fly might look pretty cool with its hipster-like sunglasses eyes, but it's considered a terrible pest. While male deer flies collect pollen, female deer flies feed on blood. During the warmer parts of the day, they land on mammals (mostly cattle, but humans, too) and bite hard with their scissor-like jaws. Anti-coagulants in the saliva of the fly prevent blood from clotting, so they can lap it up until they're brushed away. Larger than a house fly, but smaller than a horse fly, they are hatched in batches as large as 800 eggs laid on vegetation near water. Sweet dreams!
