On this day (September 8th) in 1965, the refuge was established as a necessary place for migrating birds to stopover, feed and rest before continuing along their journey. Each October, thousands of sandhill cranes converge on the refuge marshes and a visit at dawn or dusk will provide the rare treat of large flocks of birds flying in or out of the refuge.
