Magnum Photosさんのインスタグラム写真 - (Magnum PhotosInstagram)「"The more I’ve thought about photography’s slippery relationship to 'truth', the more fascinated I’ve become in how photographic precision and Surrealism are not contradictory." - @gregoryhalpern⁠ .⁠ In an interview with writer @dismy, Halpern reflects on his new work 'Let the Sun Beheaded Be', made in the Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe, and inspired in part by the French Caribbean poet Aimé Césaire. “Over the years,” Halpern remarks, “I’ve become less interested in ‘documentary’ and more interested in the space between fiction and non-fiction.”⁠ .⁠ Halpern made this work for "Immersion," a French-American photography commission organized by the Fondation d’enterprise Hermès (@fondationhermes) in collaboration with Aperture (@aperturefnd), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (@sfmoma) and Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson (@fondationhcb).⁠ .⁠ An exhibition of the work opens at Fondation Henri Cartier -Bresson on September 8th, 2020.⁠ .⁠ See a selection of his work and read the full interview at the link in bio.⁠ .⁠ PHOTO: "This photograph was made inside a former slave prison in the town of Petit-Canal, Guadeloupe. Growing inside the old prison was a Ficus citrifolia, also known as a shortleaf fig tree or “strangler fig,” named for its huge, powerful roots. The structure had been all but abandoned, but its neglect gave life to an uncanny memorial of sorts. Standing in the building it was impossible not to sense the unfathomable depth of pain there.
