Magnum Photosさんのインスタグラム写真 - (Magnum PhotosInstagram)「In a Q&A with photography writer Diane Smyth (@dismy), Magnum photographer @gregoryhalpern discusses colonialism, representation, portraiture, and poetry in the context of his forthcoming book and show 'Let the Sun Beheaded Be' about the Caribbean archipelago of Guadeloupe, and inspired by the French Caribbean poet Aimé Césaire.⁠ .⁠ Halpern's interest in photographing Guadeloupe - a former French colony - arose from an initial commission to photograph anywhere in France. Halpern "wanted to re-consider what images, what locations, and what people come to mind when one thinks of 'France'. Halpern says, "Relative to the US, the history of slavery and colonialism is everywhere you look in Guadeloupe. In 1794, Britain invaded Guadeloupe; in order to repel the British, the French enlisted enslaved Guadeloupeans under the promise to abolish slavery if they won. The French won, and the promise to abolish was initially kept, but eight years later in 1802 Napoleon cancelled the law and reinstated slavery.
