The Coahuila box turtle lives in the unique and imperiled Cuatro Ciénegas valley of northern Mexico. There, a desert valley is dotted with hundreds of turquoise pools. Unlike other North American box turtles, this species is aquatic, leaving its watery home mainly to trek across the desert in search of new water sources to make its living. Only about 1,000 remain, and their future is threatened by development of the valley that drains the water table on which they rely.
