Photo by @deeptiasthana Nestled amid the snowcapped Himalaya of Kashmir, Gurez was once part of the ancient Silk Road connecting Kashmir with Kashgar in modern-day China. In its heyday during the 12th century, the valley was known as Dardistan, after the Dard-Shin community who call it home.
The history of the Dard-Shins has been recorded in literature. Greek historian Herodotus, who lived in the fifth century B.C., described them as warrior-like people on the frontier of India. Many of the cultural markers of the Dard-Shins are fast disappearing, including the traditional Shina language, which is now taught in many primary schools. However, urban influences are creeping in with simple things such as packaged water and drinks, which locals have now begun using.
