Photo by Robbie Shone @shonephoto Imagine being given the task of getting thousands of soldiers safely across this mountainous terrain and out of sight from the enemy below. That was the challenge faced by military commanders as battles raged across the Dolomites during the First World War. In response, they embraced the mountains and made them climbable and accessible to the troops. They installed cables, wires, and metal rungs. Those via ferratas (iron roads) are still in place today and now lead climbers and mountaineers to some of the greatest summits in the Alps.
