The name 'Itsukushima' literally means 'island of worship', and from ancient times the island itself was worshipped as a god. From its beginnings, the Itsukushima Shrine drew fishermen and tradesmen who sailed the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors today still pray for the safety of those who ply the sea. The view of Itsukushima Shrine and its distinctive red O-torii gate, meant to be a portal between the mundane and the sacred, has long been considered one of the three finest in Japan. It is a designated Japanese National Treasure and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1996. At high tide, both the O-Torii gate and the shrine appear to float on top of the water. At low tide, visitors can walk right up to the foot of the gate to experience it up close and see the three 'mirror ponds' that often appear in the exposed sand around the shrine. #itsukushima #itsukushimashrine #hiroshimajapan #shrine #japaneseshrine #hiroshima」8月23日 8時12分 - yamashitaphoto
