His sculptural renderings subject his materials to monumental displays of tension and metamorphosis, providing a viewing experience that is seismic in its sense of motion and distortion. Paving slabs pull loose and bike frames are dismantled as Kiessling finds his way to the essence of the city, the clash between individuality and mass production at the heart of his unrelenting quest. Kiessling is somewhat of an expert on the properties of industrial materials, noting their weaknesses and strengths in order to push them to the bounds of what is possible. One of his sculptures is forged out of a four meter long plank, manipulated such that its ends connect. It is these climatic positionings that build a sense of awe as well as anticipation, the viewer becoming witness to the artist’s articulation of both power and intensity. The city is distilled and stripped back in this exhibition, made vulnerable by the gallery’s lights and the viewer’s presence.
