Although, It may have taken 48 shattered combs and brushes to realise that my black hair is truly strength and power personified. The vivid memories of my 10-year-old self chanting, “beauty is pain” whilst sitting for eight hours under the tired working fingers of my mother’s hands, in attempts to convince myself it will all be worth it in the end. Trying to figure out exactly when that ‘end’ would be by occasionally reaching to scratch my perfectly fine scalp, in the process of being disguised, to search for how many braids were left to entwine. The biggest life lessons that I have obtained have stemmed from the ever growing roots in my head. Lessons of resilience, patience and understanding, are only three examples of a list as big as my Afro. Growing up in a society that isn’t completely kind to the wonders of the 4C hair type, the many ugly thoughts of self-doubt and hatred can be pretty plain sailing. From the snarky comments of my teachers to the giggles of my peers in school, the temptation to not chemically straighten my ‘fro was almost impossible to fight.
