At the age of 28, the Nigerian-Irish stylist already has an extensive portfolio, including her work styling everyone from Kojey Radical to Stormzy and Mahalia. Recognised for styling Joy Crookes at the Brits 2020 when the singer turned heads in her stunning yellow Lehenga, her focus is on authentically embracing her client’s cultures and empowering their body image.  “I never felt connected to my heritage or to my culture growing up. I honestly felt ashamed of it, like it wasn’t something to be proud of. I wanted to assimilate into the culture that I was surrounded by”, said Roar. Today, as a proud Black woman, Roar is saddened by her childhood rejection of her race, admitting to me how she would tell her peers she was Caribbean instead of Nigerian, assuming that it was more ‘socially acceptable’.  The idea of her styling reaching children across the UK is important to Roar. Particularly in reaching those growing up in towns like the white dominated area of Colchester, Essex which she grew up in, as one of only three Black students in her school.   It is artists like Beyoncè who Roar credit with now changing the reflection for future generations. ‘Black is King’, Beyonce’s visual album released last week on Disney Plus, left Roar in awe and even brought her to tears. “I have seen people wearing Gele’s my whole life on my aunties and in small pockets of my world”, said Roar of the traditional, Nigerian head wrap that is worn during special occasions. “But to see something like that on a big scale is so important because it teaches you and it teaches the people that you are important and that your culture matters”.
