In our conversation on @amrpodcast with @patpruittmetalsmith and others, we discuss the importance of building relationships with indigenous artists directly, instead of buying “native inspired” work from major companies.

Part of the reason for doing this is so that we can understand the complexity of their work and appreciate the process that artists go through to make the jewelry that we adorn ourselves with. It helps us to be in good relation with the work itself.

These earrings are handmade by Pat. To make them he anodizes the titanium, which is a process that adjusts the oxide level of metal surfaces. This adjustment changes the spectrum of light, resulting in perceived color. It is not coating, nor does use dyes. Instead, it uses science!

“I make these dragon flies because I like them. They’re such a cool shape. This is my second version of the dragon fly, the first was a zirconium version. Also. Science”.

Pat Pruitt (Laguna Pueblo and Chiricahua Apache) currently resides on the Laguna Pueblo Reservation in the village of Paguate, NM. In his teens, Pat was fortunate enough to study silversmithing under Greg Lewis, a local smith. Several years later, he met Charlie Bird, another esteemed jeweler from Paguate. He taught Pat a different view on silverwork and aesthetics of jewelry design. During his college years and beyond, he owned, operated, and managed Custom Steel Body Jewelry making stainless steel and titanium body jewelry for the body piercing industry. Pat now focused his work on personal adornment jewelry after encouragement from many friends and fellow artists. With a University background in Mechanical Engineering, Pat fuses his machinist skills with silversmithing, his designs have traditional Native undertones, with a contemporary edge. Coupled with influences both on and off the reservation, industrial design, limitations forced onto him by the material of choice, and evolving technology. Pat’s work is truly innovative. Pat is a guest on our special three part series “Indigenous Artist to Artist” on @amrpodcast . We invite you to listen. :) - Matika Wilbur
